A Time of Returning

This call goes out each year preparing the way for the fall feasts of Israel. God is sending forth a call today to prepare our hearts in intimacy. God uses the feasts to point to the times and seasons in which we live. This is the season of each year which is specifically set apart for returning to Him. Additionally, it is a time of preparation for the judgments that will culminate at the end of the age.

The feasts of the Lord are important times of the year in which the Lord desires to meet His people. In Leviticus 23:2 the Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.’” The Hebrew word for feast is mo’ed, meaning “an appointment, a fixed time or season, an assembly, an appointed time, a set time.” The verse above makes it clear that these are the LORD’s feasts, not just Israel’s feasts. As Christians, grafted into the Jewish Vine, Yeshua, we are considered “spiritual Israel,” and are also called to celebrate the feasts of the Lord, described in the Torah.

We do not celebrate the Feasts out of religious duty, but from a place of revelation that they “are a shadow of things to come,” and that Christ desires to encounter us in the celebration (Col 2:17). The word “convocation” in Lev 23:2 is miqra, which means “rehearsal.” The feasts are actually rehearsals for appointed times that will be (have been) fulfilled! The first three “rehearsals,” Passover/ Feast of Unleavened Bread, Feast of Firstfruits, and Feast of Weeks were all fulfilled in Christ’s first coming. The last four feasts (Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles, and the Sabbath) are yet to be fulfilled and we believe they will be at Jesus’ second coming. Until then we are to rehearse (even the fulfilled ones).

We are currently in the Hebrew month of Elul, which is the month leading up to fall feasts. This month is vitally important in the Jewish faith, as it is a time of preparation for the fall feasts. The name of the month itself is considered to be an acronym for the phrase “Ani l’dodi v’dodi lee — “I am to my Beloved and my Beloved is to me” (Song of Songs 6:3). This month is a part of a larger time period called “Teshuva,” a forty-day segment given to searching one’s heart and returning to the Lord in preparation for the 10 Days of Awe and ultimately Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the day traditionally spent in fasting and repenting for sins – national and personal. Most Jews also believe that this forty-day period coincides exactly with the forty days Moses spent on Mt. Sinai in the presence of God, repenting for the sins of Israel, and rewriting the Ten Commandments on the stone tablets (Ex 34:28).

Now is a prophetic time of rehearsing the month of preparation before a season of judgment. I believe the Spirit is presently wooing us individually and as a Body, into a holy time of consecration and returning. These are Joel’s exact sentiments as he pens the words,

“Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping, and with mourning. So rend your heart and not your garments; return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and relents from doing harm. Who knows if He will turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind Him…?” (Joel 2:12-14)

The context of this verse is the imminent judgment of the Lord upon Israel, in sending the Babylonians to destroy Jerusalem and take Israel captive. The verses are still relevant today, as the Lord calls us to return to Him before a time of judgment, ultimately coming upon the whole earth during the last 3 ½ years of this age. The finality of the Great Tribulation will end with a time of returning, when the Jews return to Jerusalem and face a time of national judgment on Yom Kippur, the complete fulfillment of Teshuva.

The verses 15-17 of Joel 2 are actually recited on Tishrei 8, the day before Yom Kippur begins, calling the Jews to “blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly….” Amazingly, each morning during Elul, a shofar (trumpet) is blown to awaken listeners to the coming time of judgment, and Psalm 27 is recited. It is a Psalm in which David expresses his faith in God and desire for God. I believe God is calling us to the same heart posture during this season, having a heart set on seeking Him.

He is calling us into deep intimacy with Him that says, “I am to my Beloved and my Beloved is to me.” Right now, He is hedging up our way with thorns, that if we turn to the right or to the left our paths to lesser “lovers” are cut off. He created us in such a way that we would not find fulfillment in the things of the flesh. We can only find true fulfillment in Him alone and He is jealous for all of our affections. He allows us to seek after those things for a time, but knows we will return saying, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for then it was better for me than now’ (Hos 2:6-7). This is a season of betrothal, a time of remembrance of the Lord’s mercy. In fact, during Elul, the Jews traditionally focus on Exodus 34:6-7, and the thirteen attributes of God’s mercy. It is a time that He softens our hearts and draws us away, that we would run after Him, for He truly desires to show us the kindness of His mercy (SOS 1:4).

During this intense prophetic season, I charge you, “seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while he is near” (Isa 55:6). He is near, and He is calling us to return, both corporately and individually, to seek to know Him fully just as we are known (1 Co 13:12). He longs for us to draw near to Him with hearts full of the assurance of His love. He beckons you. Can you hear Him? Can you hear the sound of the trumpet, calling you to return to the Lord with all your heart? Have you felt the sting of the thorns as you sought your own way? In mercy He calls you again, saying, “Return, Beloved.”

Posted in <a href="http://ihop-atlanta.org/wordpress/?cat=2" title="View all posts in Front Page" month I was compelled to write about the need to consistently identify ourselves as crucified, no longer seeing the cross of Jesus as something mostly substitutionary. God cannot and will not sanctify the old man who is “corrupted by deceitful desires” (Eph 4:22). Our problem is that we were born into sin (Psalm 51:5), and that sickness can’t be healed - it must be put to death.

The story of Lazarus’ death and resurrection has many awesome revelations of God’s nature, but one lesson points to God’s plans for true healing. When hearing that Lazarus was sick, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (John 11:4). Jesus then waits to go to Bethany until Lazarus has died! This is a picture of God’s process for us - true healing comes through death and resurrection. The sin nature was condemned by Jesus Christ on the cross (Rom 8:3), and so we must let Him take us there. This becomes easier as we meditate on the truths of His resurrection, so that “we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead” (2 Cor 1:9).

So then, the question arises: how do I practically walk this out in this day and age?

We covered one major point last month, which is meditating on verses that declare us crucified with Christ, and receiving that truth as our own. Let us next consider the words written to the Galatians: “Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit.” (Gal 5:24, 25, italics mine)

Notice how Paul says “we must also follow the Spirit” immediately after saying we “have crucified the flesh.” This tells me that our crucifixion is immediate upon reckoning, but progressive through the growing faith. We must reckon ourselves crucified with Christ, moment by moment and day by day, but it is the Spirit of Christ that applies the power of the cross to our walk, if we follow Him.

The “passions and desires” of Adam’s fallen nature run deep, and are themselves deceivers (Eph 4:22) which cause corruption (2 Peter 1:4). This demands the daily calling to remembrance of our position in Christ - crucified and risen, and therefore subject to His new nature! This new nature is not like Adam’s nature. Romans 5 tells us that Adam was to be the prototype, or preliminary model, of the Coming One, Jesus Christ. However, sin made Adam, and unfortunately us, the antitype, or opposite, of the True Son. This is where the Holy Spirit comes in.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Son (Gal 4:6), and now gives us a new heart cry “Abba, Father!” Our old nature has deceitful passions and desires, but now our desire is to be conformed to the likeness of the Son. His name was John” (John 1:6). I recently read that scripture and was struck by its directness. The Word declares that God himself sent John the Baptist to earth. As I read through the story of John’s birth, the Lord asked me a question, “ How long did I know John?” I thought for a moment. I knew Psalm 139 said that God knew us even before we were born. When I looked at the life of John, it was clear that God knew exactly when he would be born, what he would do, and who he would become. He knew from eternity’s past that John would be birthed near the time of his Son’s arrival and he would be a forerunner, preparing the earth for the revealing of the Messiah. He timed it perfectly. I considered those things and said “Always, you always knew John.” Then I felt the Lord asking me, “Is it any different with any other child that is born?” No, I thought, it couldn’t be. If you always knew John, then you always knew me, and you always knew who I would be, when I would be born, and what I would do. The same is true for every one of us.

Put your name in John’s place. Imagine the word saying that about you. There was a man; a woman sent from God, her name was…You! That is the reality of it. We are all a word sent down from heaven. A word sent from God for this time, for this generation. There’s a song by Jason Upton that I love. The lyrics read, “Do you know, you’re a word from heaven? Do you know you’re a child of God? Every word that comes down from heaven will not return void until it’s succeeded in what I sent it to do.” The Lord always knew John would fulfill his destiny as a forerunner for his Son. In Psalm 139, David says “All the days of our lives are written in His book.” Imagine the wonderful things this book must say for your life. Who you are, all you will become, the exciting adventures He has planned for you. It’s a beautiful love story written by the Creator, starring guess who? YOU! You play the lead role!

After witnessing the miraculous events around John’s birth, the people proclaimed, “What type of child will this be?” My question to you is this. What type of person are you? You’re not an accident; you’re no mere collection of cells and DNA. You’re more than that, you are a word sent from God. There will never be a word just like you. Imagine the Father in the drawing room of heaven with Jesus and the Holy Spirit together, dreaming of you. This one, her name will be Sarah; she will love to laugh like I do. She will be a dancer, she’ll love the poor, and she will have a tender heart. My son, Michael, he will be an artist. He’ll love to use his imagination and create with his hands; He’ll be a son after my own heart. Perhaps Jesus chimes in and says, ‘Father, let’s give this one a desire to reach the broken, just like I do. Then the Holy Spirit says, “Let’s give this one a longing to teach, just like I have. Oh, and this one, she will live in a dark time, where there will be many difficulties, but she will shine like a light in the midst of it”. The scene is imaginary but the message is true. We are sons and daughters of God and he has made us in his image. When we are free to be who he made us to be, we will truly reflect his heart.

When you look at a baby, what is the first thing you usually say? Oh, she looks like her dad, he looks just like his mom, she has his nose, and he has her eyes. Children look like their parents, and our father is God himself. I look at my friends and I can see in each one of them various facets of the Lord’s personality. In one, I will see a fighting spirit, like Jesus the warrior King. In another, I see kindness like Jesus the Gentle Shepherd. As for me, I have a heart for Justice. I long to see freedom for the captives and deliverance for the afflicted. Sometimes I can feel discouraged, wondering if my desires are too “intense.” Then I remember that I have a heart for justice because God has given me His heart. He is the one who loves Justice; He says it in his word. He wants it more than I do. It’s not just a good idea on my part, it’s his desire. When I long for it, I am manifesting the nature of my Heavenly Father. I am his word from Heaven sent to the earth to reflect Him and give Him glory.

Let’s began to see ourselves as we really are. Each time hoping something will break and leave a lasting impression on your walk with the Lord. The hunger that drives us to recommit, re-surrender, and re-consecrate ourselves is excellent, for God responds to the hungry! However, I have found that the hunger is a stepping stone, and not the only means to the end I desperately yearn for: to be wholly set apart for His pleasure, offering my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God (Rom 12:1) My journey through the past 4 years at the International House of Prayer Atlanta has been filled with necessary teachings to prepare me for the coming storm - the end of this age. Each time I would be stirred and find my spirit ready to surrender to God’s will, my soul lagging a bit behind, and my flesh in direct defiance. This can make altar calls absolutely painful! With very little revelation of where I stood in regards to my new life, I found myself frustrated that my heart was set on the surrender, but my actions didn’t match such convictions. This is the struggle Paul speaks of in Romans 7:

“For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me. So I discover this principle: when I want to do good, evil is with me. For in my inner self I joyfully agree with God’s law. But I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh, to the law of sin.” (HCSB v.18-25) This struggle will plague us if we do not consider his words in the prior chapter:

“Are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life… For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished… Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him… So you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (HCSB v.3,4,6,8,11) Paul says his mind agrees with God’s ways, but his flesh does not. It then makes perfect sense of the language he uses in Romans 6 on how to crucify the flesh: believe, know, consider, reckon. Until we appropriate (receive as our own by faith) the truths of our joining in Christ’s death, consecration is impossible. God will not consecrate the old! I continue to reach for the place in my spiritual growth where it is no longer just the cross of Christ Jesus for me, but me joined with Christ on the cross. When we identify ourselves as joined with Him in His death, consecration is inevitable!

H. Duncan once wrote, “God asks us to present our bodies as living sacrifices to Him. Until we have done this, there is nothing else we can do. Notice this exhortation comes after Romans 6. There is a reason for this order - crucifixion comes before consecration. Un-crucified self refuses to be consecrated. This is why so many people with all sincerity walk down the aisles again and again, consecrating un-crucified self to God.” Let us also then, consider Paul’s epistle to the church in Ephesus. He spends three chapters declaring who they are in Christ - three gold mines of identity to appropriate! Only after those chapters, and two powerful apostolic prayers, does he then begin to charge them with the ways in which they should walk.

It has been indispensable for me to sit before the cross and join myself to it in thanksgiving and hope. My hope for the Church is this: to take the time to receive in meditation, thanksgiving, and prayer the truths concerning the new and living way of the Spirit. This has brought me great peace: it is the Spirit who sanctifies and consecrates the believers. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely. In our society we have defined pleasure in all sorts of way and many in the church actually associate pleasure with something negative or something that is reserved for the world and not for Christians. I looked up the word pleasure in the dictionary and here is what I found.

Pleasure- enjoyment or satisfaction derived from what is to ones liking; recreation, or amusement, diversion, enjoyment.

Now here is an interesting concept. As Americans we have recreation and amusements available to us at any moment. Going out to eat, going to the movie theatre, socializing, and shopping are among the few. I myself find all of these things pleasurable, but I have had to ask my own heart; do I find these things that are so readily available to me more pleasurable than God? Of course most us right off hand would answer- no! God you are number one. And I do believe that is the sincere cry of our hearts, which God sees. But, as the Bride of Christ it is of utmost importance that we begin to move out of the mentality of good intentions/ noble words and into mature partnership with a life-style to back up our noble words.

I sense that we are in a season where the line is being drawn and the bar is being raised. I have been asking God to reevaluate several things in my life. I want to be a young adult that considers the pleasures of heaven to have more appeal than the secondary pleasures of this world. So how do our weak hearts enter into heavenly pleasures, when we are so easily distracted and prone to wander? For me, it is this – I fell in love with a man named Jesus and now I am obsessed with Him. Yes, that is the only word I can come up with to define my relationship with this Man Christ Jesus. I am unashamed to admit this reality. He is my driving force, my reason for living and breathing, my reason for being a Christian. I know for some these words that I have chosen might sound a little taboo, a little intense, maybe even scandalous. But I have learned that there is no other way to live.

Prayer: God, help us. movement. When I was a young and ignorant man in the homosexual lifestyle, I learned about the oppressive events that “victimized” the homosexual community. Years ago, when I was informed of these riots that took place in 1969, I joined in the indignant emotions that continue to plague the community I was once a part of. These emotions give the victim mentality a greenhouse to thrive in. In that moment, I bit the bait.

After some time, however, I began to question what exactly we were proud of. At the gay pride events I attended, I saw things that even made me blush and look away - which was quite a feat considering the dangerous and carefree lifestyle I was living. We claimed to be like everyone else, yet we took the time every June to celebrate our obvious differences. This was a complete contradiction that confused my heart.

The problem in 1969 was the way in which intolerance for homosexuality was addressed. America in the late 60’s saw homosexuality as something abnormal, assuming it was a mental problem. It was dealt with by imprisonment in a mental ward or jail, and by striking fear in the hearts of homosexual men and women dealing with this struggle of attraction. After going through the intense battle of coming out of the closet, and then coming out of homosexuality, I can sympathize with the poor souls in those decades. Our nation was offering imprisonment without the option of true deliverance and transformation. The result: confusion, offense, anger, resentment, and a victim mentality spread throughout the entire homosexual community. So what is the solution? We need to cry out for a spirit of might to come on this generation! Let me explain…

The two warriors - Jehu and David

This hour is in need of those like Jehu. Effective ministry to men and women coming out of homosexuality is going to stem from solid leaders secure in their gender and pure sexuality. The joy and peace they have from their identity and enjoyment of holiness and purity will stir wounded hearts to desire the same. I believe many, if not most, of these will be heterosexual men and women.

When Jezebel was killed, it was not Jehu who overcame her, but the men under her control who cast her down. Jehu rode in the confidence that he was anointed by God; as a strong masculine leader, he called out to the eunuchs under her authority. When he arrived, she tried to seduce him as well, but he did not even acknowledge her. His call to the men under her order was “Who is with me? Who?” (2 Kings 9:32) They saw God was with him, and upon showing their faces to him, he commanded them, ”Cast her down!” (v.33). Though they were emasculated by her, there was still some fight left in them! However, it was only after they showed their faces to Jehu that he asked them to cast her down.

This is a prophetic picture of what is needed with the homosexual community today. We need spiritually strong men, anointed by God, confident in their identity to provoke and to lead. The men who are bound by homosexuality will want a leader to follow out of their bondage. When they show their faces, they are in the willing, open heart - past hiding and past external shame. The Holy Spirit will then instruct them and empower them to forsake their old master.

When I was first saved, I was living with the mindset that I was going to be gay and saved. Only after the Lord romanced me was I ready to cast that old way down. It was necessary that I first saw my need for a Savior. Then I saw He was someone I wanted to follow. Then upon His invitation, I was able to cast homosexuality down. It was scary, but this order made it possible.

I think the Church has it backwards. He is such a gentleman; He never forces Himself on anyone. So I prayed, in my weak words an agreement with His desire for me to be with a woman, thus by faith casting down my old ways. The very room where I prayed that prayer is where I sit right now as I write this: the prayer room in Atlanta, GA. Before IHOP-Atlanta bought this building it was owned by a local church. Every Thursday night the college ministry would meet in the same room where the prayer room now exists in continual worship. It was in this very room I surrendered my homosexuality to the God who gives beauty for ashes! It is only fitting that my true deliverance would come from sitting before Him in this privileged place.

I am now married to an amazing woman of God, who fights alongside me. I had to endure much, and still wage war with this. The fight that men and women in homosexuality must go through to come to deliverance is like Goliath taunting the Israelites, challenging them (1 Samuel 17). The spirit of homosexuality continually torments men and women, saying “aren’t you tired of fighting yet? Who will fight me?” And, as it says in Scripture, “When [they] heard these words, they lost their courage and were terrified.” (v.11) But it is in these days that God will raise up Davids, who come for the sake of the men in battle (v.26), and for the name of the Lord to be exalted (v.45, 46). The Davids will be the ones who come out of the lifestyle and confront this spirit head on, knowing the glory of the name of Jesus Christ and that His arm is not too short to save (v.47). <span I was bundled up in layers, standing in the Cotton Bowl Stadium with tens of thousands of other believers. While my family gathered in Connecticut for holiday festivities, I had chosen to forgo Thanksgiving and fly to Texas for a 12-hour solemn assembly called TheCall Dallas. I traded turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie for a day of prayer, fasting and mourning. TheCall Dallas was a day of corporate repentance for our nation. It was a time to come humbly before God, asking Him to forgive our sins and release mercy in our land.

TheCall Dallas was directed by Lou Engle, a father in the modern-day prayer movement. Throughout the day, Lou spoke of radical ones being raised up–ones who would burn with fiery hearts and passionate zeal. Lou spoke of Nazirites–ones who like John the Baptist were called to live lives set apart for the Lord. As he spoke it hit me, “He’s talking about me!” I thought to myself, “This is who I am. This is who I was made to be!” For the first time someone was telling me it was okay to be extreme in my love for God. I realized that day that I was called to be a Nazirite.

The word Nazir in Hebrew means ‘consecrated one; separated one; a person of the vow.’ Nazirites were ones that were set apart unto God. They were often birthed in times of moral crisis and spiritual decay in the land. When the people of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, He gave them over to the Philistines for 40 years. At the end of that time when He desired to raise up a deliverer, He did it by answering the cries of a barren woman named Manoah. He sent an angel to tell her she would have a son, and no razor would ever come upon his head, for the child would be a Nazirite unto God from the womb. Her son Samson was declared to be a Nazirite before he was even born! (Judges 13:5). When Eli’s sons were corrupting the priesthood and the word of the Lord was rare, God spoke through a young boy named Samuel. Samuel was birthed through the desperate prayers of his barren mother, Hannah. She vowed to the Lord that if He gave her a son, she would give him back to the Lord all the days of his life, and a razor would never come on his head (1 Sam 1:11). When the Lord wanted a forerunner who would prepare the way for His Son’s arrival, He gave a child to barren Elizabeth. The angel that announced his birth proclaimed he would be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb (Lk 1:15). Samson, Samuel and John the Baptist were called as lifelong Nazirites. All three were born to barren mothers who were desperate for God. In their pain, they cried out to God and He gave them arrows in their quiver–sons who would change history. Out of once barren wombs, mighty deliverers were birthed!

Aside from lifelong Nazirites, there are many who chose to take a Nazirite vow for a specific time of consecration to God. The three main components of a Nazirite vow, outlined in Numbers Chapter 6, are abstaining from wine, strong drink, grapes or anything produced from the grape vine, growing their hair long, and not going near dead bodies. All three of these requirements had great spiritual significance.

“He shall abstain from wine and strong drink…” Numbers 6:3

Wine was a common beverage choice in that day. It wasn’t a sin to drink wine, and many people drank it as a normal part of their everyday life. Wine was something that was enjoyable, sweet, and desirable to man. By not drinking wine, eating grapes, or even partaking of anything that came from the grape vine, Nazirites were declaring to God “I have no good besides you” (Ps 16:2). They were making it known that they had found something greater than wine. It was God’s love. They forsook even the legitimate pleasures of this life for the greater pleasure of knowing God. Although their vow was for a set time, the heart of a Nazirite desired to live their entire life seeking the Lord through fasting and prayer. They embraced a fasted lifestyle unto God.

“He shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long.” Numbers 6:5

The Nazirite’s long locks were an outward sign of their inward consecration to God. The length of their hair was a symbol of their heart’s devotion to the Lord. Their long hair was visible to all around them. There was no hiding a Nazirite. Their dedication to God was “put on display” before all. They were burning and shining lamps, who refused to hide their light under a bushel, but chose to rather put it on a lampstand for the world to see.

Nazirites did not always look like the religious norm. Jesus said to the crowds about John, “What did you go into the wilderness to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces! But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet” (Mt 11:8). Nazirites weren’t concerned about impressing others with their appearance, for they cared more about pleasing God with their lifestyle. His opinion was what mattered most to them.

In 2007, I went on a year-long Nazirite vow where I felt impressed by the Lord to allow my hair to grow out naturally. I stopped chemically straightening my hair, which I had done since the age of 12, and grew it out as an offering unto God. This was challenging because I did not think my natural hair was very attractive. The Lord used this season to speak volumes to me about my identity and beauty before Him. He gave me a dream where I was in a salon feeling pressure to straighten my hair. As I stood there, someone passed me a note that said, “Never make apologies for your hair.” The Lord was shouting to me, “You never have to make apologies for the way I made you; you’re beautiful to me.” I love my hair now because I see it as he does. Nazirites find their true identity in the affections of the Lord towards them. “Your head crowns you like Carmel, The king is captivated by your tresses” (Son of Sol 7:5)

“All the days of his separation to the LORD he shall not go near to a dead person…” Numbers 6:6

Nazirites could not go near a dead person. When their father or mother died they were not even allowed to go to their funeral. This was extreme devotion to God. To have one closest to you die and not even able to go near their body must have been a very painful thing. Yet Nazirites were willing to sacrifice even this to the Lord. Jesus said, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Mt 10:37). By accepting the terms of this vow, Nazirites were choosing to love God even more than their own father or mother.

This also speaks of renouncing dead works and legalistic activities. The Lord wasn’t looking for the Israelites to take this vow out of mere religious duty or obligation. He wanted a sacrifice from a willing heart full of love and desire for him. Nazirites choose to lay down their lives for the Lord. Like Jesus said in John 10:17 “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” A Nazirites sacrifice was born not out of pressure to please God, but out of heartfelt passion for him. They knew they were loved by God, and their vow was made in response to that love.

“All the days of his separation he is holy to the LORD.” Numbers 6:8

Nazirites were characterized by their pursuit of holiness. Not touching death can also speak of staying away from sinful things that would bring death to their souls. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death.” The Nazirite vow was one of separation unto God. They weren’t looking to see how much they could get away with. Rather they were longing to see how far they could go in pursuing holiness in the fear of the Lord. They chose to separate themselves from anything that would defile their purity before God.

A Nazirite’s desire is to love God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength. It is extremism for God, based not out of legalism, but out of love. It is love that causes the Nazirites to forsake everything for God. It is love that leads them to fast, pray and pursue holiness. Nazirites are arising in America today. There is an army of young and old who are tired of living lives of compromise and half-hearted devotion to God. They are burning men and women, full of fire and zeal for God. History belongs to ones such as these. Their wholehearted love moves the heart of the Father, and it will shift the culture of this nation. Let the longhairs arise! Let America see her Nazirites!

Posted in Front At this point (at my old age of 25), I had decided I was done with the conference thing. So when it came time for the yearly One Thing conference, I was determined that I could get the mp3 afterwards, download it on my Mac, and enjoy all the preaching via I tunes. That was the plan until Mike Bickle sent an email asking everybody to attend the 2008-year end One Thing conference. In all of Mike Bickles years of ministry, I have never seen him highlight and strongly suggest that we all gather together for a conference. I prayed about it and felt a leading from the Holy Spirit that I was not only supposed to attend, but that this year was going to be very significant.

So I drove thirteen hours from Atlanta to Kansas City in my 1998 Champagne Toyota Corolla to attend the conference all the while contemplating what was going to happen. When I arrived I realized that Mike Bickle was teaching on the Book of Revelation every afternoon. Other leaders at Ihop were preaching and teaching in the morning and evenings and like always, I was blown away by the amount of revelation that God has given all these teachers and leaders as well as the fact that so many young adults showed up to hear about the book of revelation. While I was at the conference a sobriety came to my heart like I have never felt before. Across the earth He is preparing the church for His return; different denominations, ages, nations, and races were all represented. If this isn’t enough of a reason to attend the conference I don’t know what is. But in all honesty even after all the preaching and the teaching through the week, I felt like God had me attend specifically for the final evening.

Every year at the One Thing conference, we ring in the New Year by worshiping God and lifting up His name. On December 31s, 2008 I headed into Bartle Hall, expecting to do what we always do at the One Thing conference on new years eve: dynamic worship and dynamic preaching and then ushering in the new year through worship, praise and thanksgiving to our God. This evening turned out to be anything but commonplace. Mike Bickle began speaking about forerunners. If you are familiar with the International House of prayer, this is not unusual. But this time as he was quoting seemingly familiar passages (Matthew 3:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight), the words were striking my heart like arrows. All of the sudden, the presence of the Lord began to rest on me and tears began streaming down my face. I knew something was about to happen but I wasn’t sure what.

My head was down and I had a slight tremble happening in my body as Mike Bickle began to say it, “ We are going to call forth the forerunners.” He described that the Lord promised Him over twenty years ago that He was going to raise up thousands of forerunners. Suddenly my head was filled with questions as he began to talk about seven commitments to help young forerunners grow into maturity. The 7 commitments are: praying at least two hours daily, setting your heart (in grace) to fast twice a week, leading diligently in the place of prayer and bible study, doing acts of justice, reading the book of revelation at least once a week, giving extravagantly, and living a life of holiness and purity .He was describing basic Christianity. I came face to face with my weakness, I realized I am not fully walking out Christianity 101.Within a few moments the Spirit spoke to my heart and began to comfort me saying that these commitments were meant to help the young forerunners not to condemn them. He also began to impress on my heart that these commitments would call us to a higher accountability and draw us in to go after our destiny and identity as those called to “Prepare the Way of the Lord”. Mike also began asking those that felt the Lord telling them to commit to this to make it a long-term commitment ten years … twenty years …

I have been committed to Ihop and prayer in a focused way for about five years and I found myself having issues. Questions and thoughts were popping in my head like, “ I don’t know if I can really do this. Am I really a forerunner? And though I have said in the past that I am committed to this as a lifetime vocation, is it real? Am I going to sign up again for ten years and really do these things?” This was a defining moment for me, because God was asking: Jennifer Lauren McIntyre, How are you going to live? How are you going to live when you are not at the conference when no one is looking? Jennifer, Do you really believe that my Son is returning to the planet and do you want to be a part of it? Then I heard the call, “If you are saying yes to these seven commitments then come up to the front.” To be honest with you, I did not respond right away, I did not jump out of my seat and rush to the front. At this point I felt like the Lord was presenting me with two choices, you are either in or your out. You are either in the game or in the stands. You are either wholehearted or letting your love grow cold (I realize that it might have not have been like this for everyone and that is ok; but this was my personal experience.).

My friend leaned over and whispered to me, “ I am not ready for this.” I understood how he was feeling. As many were flocking to the front, we were both still in our seats wanting to soak in the significance of the moment. And then I made the choice. It really was my choice, am I going to do this or not? So I said yes again, I responded to the altar call, though a bit tardy. Yes, I sign up again. Though it may be weak, I am going to try and live this out. Because I love this man Jesus and I want to help prepare the way for His return.

For more information and to sign up for the sacred charge, visit www.ihop.org.

Posted in Front Page, Articles | Comments Off

THE GOD WHO HEALS YOU
March 3rd, 2009

God loves to heal. Healing is about the knowledge of God and His obtaining glory for Himself through the lives of His servants.

This is why teaching on healing and the ministry of healing are vital areas for the church to operate, and are strongly contested by the enemy. Jesus came and revealed the Father and one of the foundational works that testified about who Jesus was as the Son of God and the nature of the Father who sent Him was His ministry of healing. So it is meant to be with us also, we the Church have been commissioned by Jesus to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom to all creation, and promised that the sign of healing will accompany our proclamation. God wants to release a testimony of Zion, and the future prosperity, life, and health that will be among the community of the redeemed who will dwell in Father’s House!

Healing is a taste of the powers of the age to come, the time when the Kingdom of Heaven will reside on earth with Jesus upon its throne in Jerusalem. It is therefore the right of every citizen of Heaven to be governed by the rules of the heavenly city and its King and not by the rulers of this age.

Jesus on the cross paid the price for our healing, salvation, and deliverance from all the powers of this fallen world and their works of darkness – including sickness. He has purchased us mind, body, and spirit and has a plan for our sanctification, so we must fight the good fight of faith against any manifestation of this evil present age in our lives. Just as sin is a lie from which we are being delivered, disease is a disorder from which we are being healed. The most powerful truth is not what we see with our eyes, but the word of God that renews our minds by the Spirit of truth.

Posted in Front Page, Articles | Comments Off

« Previous Entries

<!-- Author information is disabled per default.
